This is because of the difference in altitude and the microclimates the relief creates, giving rise to six different ecosystems. Therefore, you will find magnificent specimens of tabaibas and Canary Island spurge on the coast resembling an exotic desert with an arid climate, whilst the vegetation in the highlands is more typically Mediterranean: shrubs, thermophilic forests and vast expanses of pine trees. You will find yourself walking through junipers, olive bushes, palm trees and even the odd dragon tree, one of the Canary Islands' great symbols. The group of mammals is represented by 13 species, mostly introduced by man. The arrival of the aborigines around 2,500 years ago brought sheep, goats, dogs and pigs into the archipelago. They adapted so well that in the Canary Islands there are autochthonous breeds of these animals. The rabbit, the rats, the shrew and the Moorish hedgehog were also introduced. As for the reptiles, in Tenerife it is possible to find many and worthy of observing them carefully, because some are not found anywhere else. There are five species on the island, of which the spotted lizard is endemic to Tenerife. Some birds like herons or ducks, pass through the island looking for good weather on their migratory trips. Others, such as the turquoise pigeon, the rabiche and the blue finch are unique species on the planet that live permanently in the Canary Islands. On the coast, the gray shearwater or the osprey also delight fans of bird watching, an activity regulated by the granting of permits in certain areas.
