Em 716, no curso da Invasão Muçulmana foi conquistada pelos mouros e começou a ser referida como Albur ou Alvor, nome da serra onde foi construído o castelo de Alvor5, de que restam apenas vestígios.

Em 716, no curso da Invasão Muçulmana foi conquistada pelos mouros e começou a ser referida como Albur ou Alvor, nome da serra onde foi construído o castelo de Alvor5, de que restam apenas vestígios.
Alvor foi reconquistada por D. Sancho I em 3 de Junho 1189, mas perdida pouco tempo depois, sendo depois inserida definitivamente em Portugal em 1250 com a conquista do Algarve por D. Afonso III
Por decreto de D. Afonso V, Alvor esteve inserida nos domínios do Conde de Faro, e o título de Conde de Alvor foi criado em 1683 por D. Pedro II, sendo extinto aquando do Processo dos Távoras, pela condenação do 3º Conde de Alvor, Francisco de Assis de Távora.
