Orleans is a city on the banks of the Loire River in north-central France, and it's the capital of the Centre-Val de Loire region. Joan of Arc famously saved the city from English siege in 1429, an event celebrated with an annual festival. A re-creation of the house where she stayed during the battle, the Maison de Jeanne d'Arc, features multimedia exhibits on her life.

The mention of Orleans immediately brings to mind Joan of Arc, and the town's reputation would not be the same without the famous Maid of Orleans, who liberated it on 8 May, 1429!

The Maison de Jeanne d'Arc pays tribute to the famous figure and there is naturally also a road named after her. And what a road! It is the one that leads straight to the cathedral of Sainte-Croix, a marvel of Gothic architecture which by itself reveals city's great wealth of heritage.

Contemporary art is also celebrated in the FRAC Centre, a leading centre of contemporary art. Nicknamed 'Les Turbulences', the building alone is worth seeing.
