In June 1948, Carol II, King of Romania, was looking for a house worthy of the love that had cost her the throne. He found it in Estoril: a neoclassical palace from the early twentieth century, at the end of a cobbled avenue, guarded by an immense stone

pine. It was called Villa Mar y Sol and it was the name, they say, that won him over. There he lived with Elena Lupescu until he died in April 1953, between dinners of former monarchs, casino summers and the elegant silence of a seaside resort that, in those years, was the secret capital of Europe's exiled royalty.
