Sacavém is a Portuguese village in the municipality of Loures, a few kilometers northeast of the country's capital, Lisbon, with an area of 4.08 km² and 18,469 inhabitants (2011). Population density: 4 526.7 persons per km². It was the seat of a parish extinct in 2013, as part of a national administrative reform, to, together with Prior Velho, form a new parish called Union of Parishes of Sacavém and Prior Velho, of which it is the headquarters. Origin of the name It is thought that the origin of the name Sacavém is the Arabic etymon âqabî, meaning "near" or "neighbor" (probably from the city of Lisbon), through a corruption in aqaban; the name would eventually have been Latinized as Sakhbish, and through the accusative form Sakhab (relatively similar to the term used by the Muslims) the modern term Sacavém would have been reached.
