Marvila is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Lisbon, belonging to the Eastern Zone of the capital, with an area of 7.12 km² and 35,479 inhabitants (2021 census). Its population density is 4,983 inhabitants/km². The site of Marvila, as old as the foundation of the nationality, is one of the most typical neighbourhoods in the eastern part of the city of Lisbon. Until the nineteenth century, there was a succession of pleasant farms in this vast area of Lisbon and the fertility of the lands bathed by the Tagus was great. Until recently, it was an essentially rural parish, where farms and vegetable gardens proliferated. Even today, the examples are easy to detect: Quinta dos Ourives, Rosa, Flores, Amendoeiras, Leal, Marquês de Abrantes... These properties were mostly exploited by people from the north of the country and supplied the street markets, spread throughout the neighbourhood, the neighbourhood and, later, throughout the Capital. At the old market in Praça da Ribeira, the goods arrived transported by carts. This population originally from the north brought many of their habits and customs, namely, the Feira da Espiga, which may have its origin in a custom of the northern gardeners. But from a rural area, Marvila has become, over the years, an urban area with a parochial and factory physiognomy. However, traces of a great horticultural activity can still be seen today. The palace of the Marquis of Abrantes, in Rua de Marvila, or that of Mitra, in Rua do Açúcar, are true examples of the various manor houses that were built there. Religious monuments also abounded, such as the old Monastery of Marvila. In the twentieth century, the installation of manufacturing units from Rua do Açúcar to Braço de Prata continued. The cooperages on Rua Capitão Leitão and the wine warehouses of Abel Pereira da Fonseca (who, shortly before his death, told his descendants 'as long as the Tagus has water, Lisbon should never lack wine') are from this period. Today, these warehouses have been transformed into cultural centres. The current Marvila, a parish created by Decree-Law 42.142 of February 7, 1959, is very significant in the peripheral area of a large European city in rapid growth. It benefited considerably from the great event that was Expo 98. Its patron saint is St. Augustine. Energy Rating: E #ref:BS012409 - BS012409 - Habita Lisboa
