Seixal is a Portuguese city belonging to the district of Setúbal and the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, with about 45,000 inhabitants. It is the seat of the municipality of Seixal2 with an area of 95.50 km²3 and 166,525 inhabitants (2021),45 and is subdivided into 4 parishes. 2 The municipality is bordered to the east by the municipality of Barreiro, to the south by Sesimbra, to the west by Almada (with whom it maintains a strong affinity) and to the north by the Tagus estuary, through which it is connected to Lisbon. The municipality of Seixal has a large branch of the Tagus, with the marshland of Corroios to the west and the river Judeu to the east. Etymology Seixal comes from the Portuguese word 'pebble' because the region near the river is full of small fragments of rocks squandered by the water that are visible when the tide level is low. History It was in Seixal that the brothers Vasco and Paulo da Gama built the boats for the voyage to India. While Vasco da Gama was in Lisbon preparing for the voyage, Paulo da Gama commanded the carpenters and calafates in the construction of the ships. Estêvão da Gama, father of navigators, was commander of Seixal. The administrative and territorial organisation of Seixal has undergone several changes over time. Thus, at the time of the Five Hundred, the village of Seixal was part of the parish of Arrentela, being included in the term of Almada. It was only after the liberal revolution, following the administrative reform of 1836, in the reign of Queen Dona Maria II, that it gained council rights. However, in 1895, it became extinct. The parish of Amora was then integrated into the municipality of Almada and those of Arrentela, Aldeia de Paio Pires and Seixal in the municipality of Barreiro. Three years later, the municipality of Seixal was reinstituted, also covering the parish of Corroios, created in 1976. The changes in the administrative status followed the evolution and development of the settlements. The earthquake of 1755 was violently felt in Seixal, forcing the riverside populations to seek refuge in the baroque of the Count of Vila Nova. Reconstruction was slow. From the second half of the nineteenth century, there began to be a significant surge of economic and industrial development, with the installation of several manufacturing units (textile, glass and cork). The Arrentela Wool Company, the Fábrica da Amora glassworks and the Mundet and Wicander cork companies became known. About 100 years ago, Seixal was the main cork centre in the country. In the 1960s, the installation of the Siderurgia Nacional (inaugurated in 1961) and the bridge over the Tagus (1966) gave a new impetus to the economic development of the Municipality, with a great impact on demographic growth and the profound change in its urban characteristics. On May 27, 1993, the parish of Fernão Ferro was created, resulting from the subdivision of the former parish of Arrentela. On May 20 of the same year, the towns of Seixal and Amora acquired the status of city and Corroios became a town. The presence of the Tagus in this municipality, namely in the Bay of Seixal, conditions the emergence of a set of professions - fishermen, sailors, millers, calafates, axe carpenters - which, for years, constituted the main way of life of the populations. The urban physiognomy of the municipality was also definitively marked by the presence of the river, with the construction of tidal mills, shipyards and activities related to fishing, such as the old cod drought in Ponta dos Corvos.
